If you do your own laundry, you already know that laundry products aren't cheap. The cost can add up to a considerable amount over the course of a year. If you take some time to make your own laundry products, you'll cut a wide swath through your yearly laundry budget.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1 bar of your favorite soap
  • 1 box of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
  • ½ cup borax (optional)
  • Water
  • Large Spoon
  • 5-gallon bucket
  • Knife
  • Measuring cup
  • Fabric softener
  • Old towel
  • Bowl or bucket
  • Funnel

Homemade Laundry Detergent

Step1
Heat 4 cups of water, and while the water is heating, use a knife to shave the bar of soap into the water. Stir it until it dissolves.
Step2
Put 3 gallons of water in the bucket and stir in the soapy water.
Step3
Add the washing soda and stir it for a minute, then add the borax and stir again.
Step4
Let the mixture cool overnight. Use a cup of the homemade laundry detergent per load of laundry.

Fabric Softener Sheet

Step1
Soak an old towel in a bowl of liquid fabric softener.
Step2
Squeeze fabric softener from the towel and use a funnel to pour the excess back into the bottle.
Step3
Allow the towel to air dry, and then toss it in the dryer with wet laundry. The sheet should last a minimum of 40 loads of laundry.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a quick and cheap wrinkle remover, simply put a teaspoon of liquid fabric softener and a cup of water in a spray bottle that has a fine spray. Shake it and spray a light mist on the wrinkled clothing, but try it on a small, inconspicuous area first to make sure it won't make a spot.
