Make a Hamburger Garden Father's Day Gift

Ever notice how fathers are way more laid back than mothers when it comes to their day of honor? "Simple and uncomplicated" may be the overall dad description, but if the only Father’s Day tradition you can count on at your house is to watch your husband pretend to love soap-on-a-rope--then it’s time to upgrade your Father’s Day traditions to something more meaningful and anticipated. Read on for a fresh new idea.

From Quick Guide: Gifts For Dads 101
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pots
  • Soil
  • Pony packs of vegetables for planting
  • Gardening tools and gloves
  • Wooden plant markers
  • Craft supplies
  1. Step 1

The gifts most remembered aren’t the ones with the flashy brand names; they’re the ones created with equal parts humor and heart. Start your own Dad’s day traditions--begin with what’s common to dads--grilling! Then expand and customize to make him feel like a billion!

  2. Step 2

Plant a garden with Dad’s favorite hamburger condiments: tomato, lettuce, onion, cucumbers, peppers and whatever else makes the ultimate burger. You don't need a "back 40" to make it happen, just a few pots or a small plot of real estate in the yard somewhere.

  3. Step 3

Once everything is planted, help the kids make signs for each variety--for example "Big Daddy Tomatoes," "Who's Your Daddy Peppers," "Daddy Long Leg Cucumbers"...you're catching on.

  4. Step 4

Surprise him with the planted beds or pots, but also give him a basket of the fully grown versions so he can see what you designed for him.

  5. Step 5

Make it tradition to host another Barbeque in his honor when the condiments mature enough to eat!

Tips & Warnings
  • This gift is more about quality then quantity--if you have time and space to plant only one vegetable--then by all means plant one!
