How to Clean a Moped Carburetor

Clean the carburetor to get your moped running great again. The engine's speed is regulated by how much air can get through the carburetor. When these tiny little air-flow holes are clogged, you'll feel the effect on the engine. A simple cleaning usually gets the moped back up to speed.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Buy a general all-purpose cleaner. Carb Cleaner is a good product to use since it is made with carburetors in mind. Keep it off plastic and paint as well as your skin. Carb Cleaner can be purchased at any automobile parts store.

  2. Step 2

Remove the carburetor, taking apart all the small pieces. Usually the engine runs poorly because small pieces of dirt or sediment have worked their way into the tiny holes that the gas goes through, clogging them. You'll need to get into those small areas to truly clean the carburetor.

  3. Step 3

Place the carburetor parts on a towel or work surface. Use nonplastic gloves to protect your hands.

  4. Step 4

Spray the Carb Cleaner through all the carburetor parts. The aerosol can comes with a thin straw that you attach to the nozzle so you can get the end right up into the tiny holes. You can also use compressed air, around 80 psi, to blow out the built-up grime.

  5. Step 5

Leave harder-to-clean parts in a nonplastic bowl of Carb Cleaner overnight to loosen the sediment and get those parts clean.
