How to Become a Blood Brother Without Blood

A declaration of blood brotherhood means that you consider a male friend as close as a family. Ancient blood brother traditions required participants to share blood in some way, such as by pressing bleeding cuts together or drinking wine with blood dripped into it. Friends today may want to choose to declare their bond without blood.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine a color that represents your personality. You may choose more than one color for each person. Pick colors that have meaning for both you and your brother.

    • 2

Buy ink or paint in the colors chosen. Select ink or paint that closely matches your ideal colors.

    • 3

Pick a time and place to become blood brothers. Decide whether you want your blood brotherhood ceremony to be a private or public.

    • 4

Write an oath of brotherhood. Traditional blood brothers promised to always look after each other in any situation. Men often declared blood brotherhood with comrades in arms in order to strengthen themselves mentally for battle.

    • 5

Mark your brother's palm with the colors selected. Have him mark your palm with your colors. Clasp hands firmly to represent the mingling of your blood. Exchange oaths of brotherhood.

    • 6

Symbolize your brotherhood permanently by marking a physical item with your colors. After clasping hands with your brother, pat or smear paint from your hand onto a keepsake item. Give the item to your brother to keep.

    • 7

Interlock arms as a cultural symbol of brotherhood.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are over the legal drinking age, you could follow the Greek tradition of intertwining arms and drinking wine together.
