To get the boost before a Cosmic Race in Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii, perfect your hand movements. To beat Cosmic Mario, begin your boost up during the countdown to the race keeping your movements synchronized with the countdown.

Hold the forward button as the countdown to the Cosmic Mario race begins. This same trick works for Shadow Mario and other races throughout the game.

Press "Z" while holding forward when the countdown gets to the number "2." Press right when the "2" appears, not too early or too late.

Push "A" right as the word "Go" appears on the screen to get the boost that lasts for a few seconds at the beginning of the race.

Save your game before starting the race, and practice several times by starting the race over more than once.

Watch the boost turn yellow for a few seconds to give a lead on any of the Mario's your competing against. Continue to race well in order to beat him.

Look for shortcuts and hidden paths to help you finish the race faster.
Hit your Mario competitor when you're racing, lots of star bits will fall out. Collect as many as you can without slowing down.
Pushing "Z" or "A" off cue will get you off to a slow start, so don't jump the gun or chime in too late.
