Glider rocking chairs have been around since the 1700s and their front-to-back motion is well-loved by those familiar with them. They offer a smoother and quieter ride than a traditional rocker, and because of this they are often the preferred in a baby nursery.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide whether you want a wood, metal or plastic gliding assembly, and whether you want a swivel option as well.

  2. Step 2

Determine the style, size and color of cushions desired.

  3. Step 3

Check the display glider rocking chair for creaks, rust or other damage caused by wear and tear. If the model can't take much use, neither will the same chair in your home.

  4. Step 4

Sit in the display model. Make sure you can sit and stand upright without the glider rocking chair sliding away from you too much.

  5. Step 5

Rest your feet on the matching gliding ottoman and decide if the gliding ottoman is for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • High-end glider rocking chairs usually have glider assemblies made completely of good quality wood. More utilitarian chairs from discount chains may have wood seats and backs and metal glider assemblies. Porch glider rocking chairs may be made of plastic or wood such as cedar to prevent rusting.
