Most people are familiar with the wedding tradition of “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” to bring good luck. However, brides can also add to their good luck by following other, less-famous traditions.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wear a veil. A wedding veil has come to symbolize modesty and chastity; however, veils were originally worn to disguise the bride and fool evil spirits, because brides were thought to be particularly vulnerable.

  2. Step 2

Tie tin cans to the bridal car. This tradition originated back in the days of carriages as a way to make loud noises that would scare the evil spirits away.

  3. Step 3

Honor the wedding traditions of your culture. If you are of Chinese or Pakistani origin, wear red on your wedding day for luck. If you are of Italian origin, do not wear gold on your wedding day except for the ring that is slipped upon your finger. If you have a German background, carry salt and a small piece of bread in a pocket to ensure bounty.

  4. Step 4

Do not marry during the season of Lent, which takes place for 40 days during March and April. Old church traditions held that it was bad luck to marry during Lent, which was supposed to be a period of abstinence.

  5. Step 5

Invite all your friends and family members. Large wedding parties were looked upon as a way to confuse and prevent evil spirits from ruining the bride’s wedding day.

Tips & Warnings
  • For fun, create your own good luck tradition, and if you have children, pass it down to your daughter or daughter-in-law.
