Step 1
Insert the proper blade into the reciprocating saw. You can choose a wood-cutting blade or a finer-toothed metal-cutting one, depending on what you are cutting. Slide the blade into the front of the saw and tighten the screw on the side using an Allen wrench.
-
Step 2
Place the flexible shoe of the blade against whatever you are cutting, if possible. This will help to keep the saw steady and reduce its vibration. In some cases, it is not possible to steady the saw in this way.
-
Step 3
Select the speed of the blade. Reciprocating saws have a variable speed switch that allows you to set the blade speed for whatever you are cutting.
-
Step 4
Hold the reciprocating saw with two hands. Place one hand on the handle and trigger and the other beneath the body of the saw, just behind the nose. Squeeze the saw's trigger in the handle to start the blade.
-
Step 5
Allow the blade to do the work. If you push too hard with a reciprocating saw, the blade can stick in whatever you are cutting. Guide the saw's blade by holding the saw steady with two hands, but allow the moving blade to cut through the object.
