Things You'll Need:
- Shampoo
- Hair dryer (depending on package instructions)
- Brush or comb
- Wax or petroleum jelly
-
Step 1
Wash but don't condition your hair. Look at the package instructions to find out whether you should keep your hair wet or if you should dry it. Different brands will have different instructions. It is vital that you follow the manufacturers' instructions exactly to avoid damage to your hair and ensure the best possible results.
-
Step 2
Comb out your hair before coloring with a comb or brush. This will help you end up with a nice, even color throughout your hair. The last thing you want is patches of darker or lighter hair throughout your mane.
-
Step 3
Put a small amount of the solution on the back of your neck or inside of your elbow. Let it sit for a few minutes to test for an allergy or other reaction. If nothing happens, you can proceed. If the solution dyed your skin, remove the color with some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball. If a reaction did occur, immediately dispose of the hair color kit.
-
Step 4
Apply a layer of wax or petroleum jelly on your face around your hairline, taking care not to get it on your hair. Don't forget the tops of and behind your ears, and your neck. This will keep the dye from making contact with your skin and leaving dyed patches on it. Also, put some on your eyebrows just in case some dye does escape and run down your face. You don't need spotted eyebrows or dye running in your eyes.

on 3/18/2009 I never was my hair the day I dye it. This washes away needed oil on that scalp that protects your skin from being dried out. Also, the day before I dye my hair I do a deep condition treatment.
