Spilling wine on carpets is a common occurrence in many homes. However, instead of getting angry, act fast with some table salt. Using table salt on the wine stain can remove it from your carpet and keep your carpet looking clean and new.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Identify all parts of the wine stain. It's important to know where all the wine has spilled so that you can neutralize it before it dries on your carpet.

  2. Step 2

Pour white wine over the stain if you have spilled red wine.

  3. Step 3

Use a stack of clean paper towels to blot up as much excess moisture as possible.

  4. Step 4

Dampen a sponge with cool water and blot it over the stain.

  5. Step 5

Shake salt onto the wine stain. Using generous amounts of salt on the stains helps deter the wine from setting into your carpet and leaving a nasty stain behind.

  6. Step 6

Keep applying the salt until the carpet stops absorbing the wine. Then, cover wine stain completely with a layer of salt.

  7. Step 7

Place a stack of paper towels over the stain and weight the paper towels down with a heavy object like a trash can.

  8. Step 8

Remove the cloth or paper towels in the morning.

  9. Step 9

    Vacuum the area.

  10. Step 10

Find a good carpet stain remover to apply to your carpet. Even if the salt seems to work on your carpet, you may want to remove all remnants of the wine and salt. Consult a professional if your carpet is old or expensive.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that the tannins in your carpet will not negatively react with the salt. If the reaction is negative, a greenish or brownish stain may result from the process of trying to remove the original stain.
