Many of us can't afford to shop at the department stores when we want to buy decor for our homes. I will give you some tips and ideas to get you started in decorating your place at prices you can afford.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1
Don't underestimate the savings that "do it yourself" motto can create. Sometimes you can see something in a store that costs $20-$30, but you could make it for $5-$10 or less!!! I have seen plain vases that were decorated with wire and beads that were way overpriced. You can make these yourself for a fraction of the price and they look just as good. Please see my tips section for craft ideas.
Step2
Check out the thrift stores, garage/estate sales and flea markets. This can be hit or miss, but I have found - dishes, paintings, tablecloths and candles to spruce up the house.
Step3
Check out your local dollar stores and discount stores. You can find some cheap candles, vases, picture frames, etc. Some are great as is while others are a good start for a creative project. I have purchased plain photo frames and decorated them to suit my personal style. I have found some decent candles and holders at these places as well.
Step4
Keep an eye out for sales and coupons. Craft stores like Michael's often have great coupons in the Sunday paper. I have purchased a few pre-made flower arrangements with a 40% off coupon. They also have great project ideas on their websites. I have added a few links in the tips section below. Make sure you subscribe to their emails to receive coupons. You can subscribe to promotional emails for various retailers like major department stores. Sometimes you can use coupons on top of a sale price which can make a great bargain.
Step5
Don't forget to check with your friends and relatives. Not only might they have some great ideas, but they might also be looking to redecorate and get rid of some of their current decorations. You can get some great things for free!!!
