Remove Scuff Marks from Dress Shoes

The bad thing about dress shoes are the black scuff marks that seem to accumulate on the front of the shoes. There is a very easy way to remove them, and you can also carry this fix with you to use as-needed.

From Quick Guide: Guide to Men's Dress Shoes
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shoes with scuff marks
  • Cotton balls, soft cloth or paper towel
  • Clinique clarifying lotion #2
  1. Step 1

Find a pair of shoes that has scuff marks that you can’t seem to remove.

  2. Step 2

Take two cotton balls, a dry soft cloth, a small piece of paper towel or, in a pinch, a couple squares of toilet paper. Apply some of the Clinique Clarifying Lotion #2 on which ever item you have decided to use. You won’t need too much; a little bit goes a long way.

  3. Step 3

Gently rub the scuff mark in a circular motion. Check your cotton ball or whatever you are using for the residue of the scuff mark.

  4. Step 4

Turn the cotton balls, or whatever you are using, to the clean side and gently wide the remaining residue from your shoes.

  5. Step 5

Put on your shoes and be joyous that the hideous black marks are no more. Also, notice that the Clarifying Lotion will dry amazingly quickly.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also try eye make-up remover for this, but some are oil-based and can leave oil residue on your shoes.
  • The Clinique Clarifying Lotion #2 works the best out of all of the Clarifying Lotions because it isn’t too harsh or too weak.
  • Try buying a small size Clarifying Lotion and then ask the sales associate if they have a small sample bottle that you can use for traveling. This way you can carry a small bottle with you or keep it in your vehicle.

on 1/31/2008 Good question Karen. Not all clarifying lotion or other astringents contain witch hazel. Using regular witch hazel can leave your shoes looking dried, streaked, or tired looking. I have found that the combination of ingredients in Clinique's #2 lotion worked the best. Plus, a little bit goes a long way, so a large bottle will last a long time (if stored properly).
Thanks for the comment!

on 1/24/2008 sounds great. just wish to know: isn't all clarifying solution primarily made of witch hazel? that's a lot less expensive, if clinique's main ingredient is witch hazel, purchased at any drug store.
