Candy apples are a favorite at fall festivals, but can also be made at home.

Candy apples combine the sweet flavors of apples and candy with the spicy flavor of cinnamon. Easy to make and delicious, candy apples are the perfect treat for a crisp Autumn day. Conveniently serve these apples on sticks at Halloween parties, hay rides and other fall get-togethers. These apples can also make great gifts or favors -- just place in individual plastic bags and tie the bag tight around the stick with a pretty bow. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 8 medium apples (McIntosh work well), washed and dried with stems removed
  • 8 craft sticks
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/8 tsp. cinnamon
  • 10 drops red food coloring
  • Baking sheet
  • Waxed paper
  • Heavy saucepan
  • Candy thermometer

Instructions

      Cover a baking sheet with waxed paper.

      Press a craft stick into the bottom of each of the apples and set aside.

      Combine the sugar, water and corn syrup in heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Stir mixture and dissolve sugar.

      Reduce heat to medium. Clip candy thermometer to sauce pan. Do not stir the mixture. Cook until candy registers between 295 and 300 F.

      Remove sugar mixture from heat and stir in cinnamon and red food coloring.

      Dip each apple into sugar mixture and coat well. Let excess drain off. Transfer to the waxed paper covered baking sheet to cool. Cool for about 1 hour.

Tips & Warnings

  • For best results, serve the apples the day you make them.

  • Try coating apples with caramel, chocolate or other coatings for different flavors.

  • After coating, roll apples into chopped nuts, if desired.
