Choose body art quality henna, even if you plan on using it in your hair. Body art quality is the well sifted and is made from the highest quality leaves. Additionally, hair quality henna often has less dye, which will end up turning your hair more orange than red.

Be aware of henna that is either bright green or black. Henna's natural color is a khaki green and lightens as it ages, so many producers will add green dye to make the powder seem fresh. Black henna is most often treated with PPD, a harmful chemical that can trigger allergic reactions.
