Choose a Henna Powder

For those just starting out in henna tattooing or looking to add some natural, chemical free color to hair, figuring out which henna powder to choose is quite a challenge. Because many manufacturers add chemicals and dyes to henna powder, and each type is prepared a bit differently, you need to learn a few things before you buy. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose body art quality henna, even if you plan on using it in your hair. Body art quality is the well sifted and is made from the highest quality leaves. Additionally, hair quality henna often has less dye, which will end up turning your hair more orange than red.

    • 2

Be aware of henna that is either bright green or black. Henna's natural color is a khaki green and lightens as it ages, so many producers will add green dye to make the powder seem fresh. Black henna is most often treated with PPD, a harmful chemical that can trigger allergic reactions.

    • 3

Purchase finely sifted henna to ensure that you powder does not contain dirt, sand or small twigs which can interfere with application of the paste.

    • 4

Select Jamila henna powder if you plan on making small and intricate patterns on the skin, as this powder is extremely fine for easy application. On the down side, Jamila powder needs about 24 hours of preparation to release the dye; however, it is a reliable henna that yields fantastic color.

    • 5

Use Indian henna powder if you would like a very dark dye for skin or hair. This powder requires about 10 hours to release the dye; however, it offers a unique cherry black coloring far different than other powders.

    • 6

Buy Yemeni henna powder, perfect for subtle coloring for hair. Like the Indian henna, it takes about 10 hours to release the dye, but the gentle red is well worth the wait.

    • 7

Get the fastest henna powder to prepare if you are short of time. Moroccan henna powder is ready in two to six hours and creates a bright red color on both hair and skin.
