How to Request that Wedding Guests Do Not Give Gifts

How to Request that Wedding Guests Do Not Give Gifts thumbnail
Request that your guests do not give gifts if you do not want them.

Wedding gifts are traditional because in generations past, most people who were getting married were young and needed things to set up a household. But if you are more established and do not need things for your home, it might make more sense to request that guests do not bring gifts. Requesting no gifts is also a nice gesture for your friends and family members if you are throwing a destination wedding, as they will already be spending money on airfare, hotels and other expenses. Follow proper etiquette when you want to request that people refrain from giving gifts.

Instructions

    • 1

Include a slip of paper in the envelope when you send out your invitations that tells people not to send gifts. Don't put the information on the actual invitation. You could say something simple on the slip of paper, such as "your presence is our present." On the other hand, be more specific and tell your guests that you have been blessed with material possessions and simply do not need any wedding gifts.

    • 2

Ask your guests to give charitable donations rather than giving you gifts. Many people want to give wedding gifts, so this will make them feel good and will help out your favorite charity at the same time.

    • 3

Expect that some people will bring you gifts anyway. If they do, be gracious, do not mention that you did not want gifts, and send a thank you note. If you really do not need or want whatever they purchased, re-gift the items thoughtfully or donate them to a nonprofit organization.
