A surprising, piquant deviation from the vast majority of fried foods, these tangy appetizers are easy to make and crowd-pleasing at once.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Large saucepan
  • Two medium-sized mixing bowls
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup milk
  • Hot pepper sauce, to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups fish fry mixture
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp. garlic salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 jar sliced dill pickles
  • Bottle of ranch dressing or other creamy salad dressing or dip

Step1
Combine egg, milk and hot pepper sauce in a mixing bowl. Season with pepper.
Step2
Combine flour, fish fry mixture and garlic salt with fingers in another mixing bowl and season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step3
Heat oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat until it sizzles when sprinkled with a drop or two of water.
Step4
Dip pickle slices in egg mixture and dredge in flour mixture, shaking off the excess in both cases.
Step5
Drain pickles on a paper towel.
Step6
Serve hot fried pickles with ranch dressing for dipping.

Tips & Warnings

  • The same technique can be applied to green olives.
  • The juice from the pickles will be extremely hot. Let them cool slightly before eating.

on 3/31/2008 The recipe started off good; then we get to step 4, where you tell me to dip sliced pickles in egg mixture and dredge through flour mixture; shaking off excess. Then you jump to step 5, which tells me to drain on paper towels; wasn't I suppose to fry them first and then drain? I don't know, I'm just asking
