Chocolate gravy is good on warm biscuits or mixed into oatmeal or grits. It also can be used as a replacement in a cake filling recipe. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 3 teaspoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon flour
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/4 cups milk

Instructions

    • 1

      Heat the butter in a sauce pan on low heat. Stir the butter while it is melting to keep it from scorching.

      Add the flour and the cocoa to the butter. Mix them until they become a paste.

      Slowly add the milk, mixing it in as you add it. Make sure to add the milk before the paste scorches, though. This can be done by keeping the mixture fluid and not clumpy.

      Add the sugar, mixing as you add. Scrape the bottom of the pan while you stir to keep the sugar from sticking.

      Keep mixing until the mixture starts to thicken, then let the chocolate gravy cool slightly and serve.

Tips & Warnings

  • This gravy recipe makes two servings.

  • You must keep mixing the gravy or it will stick to the pan or scorch.
