When you begin your spring cleaning, it's time to store the heavy winter blankets away in a place free of dust, moisture and pests. Finding a place for winter blanket storage is sometimes a problem if you have limited space. This article includes some solutions for safe winter blanket storage.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clean your blankets following the instructions on the care labels. Soiled fabric attracts bugs, so always make sure they are clean before storage. Take this opportunity to remove stubborn stains with the appropriate stain removal product.

  2. Step 2

Make any repairs necessary before you place your blankets in storage. When you pull them out next winter, they'll be clean and ready to use.

  3. Step 3

Store your blankets in a cedar lined closet or cedar chest, if you have that luxury. Mothballs and moth crystals are an option, but the smell is offensive to some and is difficult to get rid of. They may also be harmful to children and pets. Check your stored items occasionally because although cedar and mothballs are moth deterrents, they won't get rid of them if the larvae are already present.

  4. Step 4

Choose plastic bins for blanket storage and slide them under the bed or stack them in a closet. They serve double duty by providing storage solutions for your springtime linens and pillows when you are using your winter blankets.

  5. Step 5

Save the plastic bags that comforters and linens come in and use them for blanket storage. They come in a variety of sizes, and sometimes more than one blanket will fit in a bag. Stack them on a shelf or store them under a bed for a dust free storage environment.

  6. Step 6

Use vacuum storage bags if you have limited storage space. You place blankets in the bag, close it and use the suction of a vacuum hose to pull the air out through a special one-way valve. Once you remove the air, and the bags are flat, allowing you to store several bags stacked on top of each other in less space.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid storing your winter blankets in a damp basement or garage where they are more likely to develop a moldy smell.
  • Consider adding a lavender sachet to your storage container to add a fresh scent to your blankets
  • If your cedar closet has lost its cedar smell, try lightly sanding the surface to reactivate the scent.
