How to Stitch a Bonnet Stitch
The Bonnet stitch is one of the many interesting variations of the buttonhole stitch. The Bonnet stitch is best done in a row because it forms an eye-catching line of twisted prongs. A row of Bonnet stitches looks great when forming a border or curve and can be used as a couching stitch. Follow the steps below to begin stitching this unique right to left stitch.

1
Thread the tapestry needle and tie a small knot at the end of the working thread to secure the first stitch.
-
2
Bring the needle up out of the fabric and make a vertical stitch going upward and inserting the needle back into the fabric.
-
-
3
Come up with the needle just to the left of the top of the vertical stitch you just made and insert the needle under the vertical stitch, with the point of the needle pointing toward the left.
-
4
Go through the fabric with the needle, just to the left of the bottom of the first vertical stitch, still taking the needle underneath the vertical stitch. When this is done, a small loop will begin to form. You want this loop to go under the vertical stitch as you make this stitch.
-
5
Pull the needle all the way through the fabric to complete the first stitch.
-
6
Continue stitching by bringing the needle up to the top and to the right of the first stitch to begin your second stitch.
