Terminating your cell phone contract ahead of time can result in a penalty called an "Early Termination Fee." Many carriers charge up to $175 for premature cancellation. But there are ways to cancel your service and avoid paying the high fees.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Call your phone company and ask if it would be OK to transfer your phone to someone else. Ask if the transfer entails any charges and have all the terms explained.
Step2
List an ad on Craig’s list or any Internet forum that you have a phone with a contract that you are interested in selling. You can also do it on eBay or Amazon.com.
Step3
List the price you are willing to sell your cell phone for. If you got this phone for free, list it for a minimal amount to cover the charges of your new cell phone service. Here is your chance profit from your old contract. Keep the price low to attract more customers
Step4
List your contact phone number in your ad to expedite your sale. once you have a buyer get his full name, contact number and mailing address. This information will be required by your phone company to process the transfer, which can be done over the phone. Your phone company will call the buyer to confirm any details, and it may run a credit check on him.
Step5
Once the transfer is complete, ship your phone along with the SIM to your buyer after he arranges payment to you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Put pictures of your cell phone with your ad on the Internet.
  • While your phone is in transit, you may want to temporarily block the SIM by calling your carrier.
  • After the transfer, call your phone company to make sure that you don't get charged for your buyer's phone bills.
  • Discontinue auto pay if you signed up for it.
  • After a month, check your credit account or any bank account that you had linked to your phone account to see that no charges have been billed.

on 6/3/2008 This will probably work, but a word to the wise, it will definitely attract shady identity thieves. Especially on Craigslist where there isn't any recourse for scams and it offers them more 'anonymity'. SIM cards should not be sold to anyone. Even 'cleared off' SIM cards can hold info to be accessed by the more diligent of the shadies out there. I'm not being a naysayer, I'm just offering a warning to be careful when reselling a card that formerly held your personal info. Thats all.

on 3/23/2008 This sounds great. I'd think you'd have to clear off your SIM card before forwarding it also. Maybe that could be another article you could write or add to this one because I'm not sure how to do that and I believe there are numbers that stay on there permanently if it's not cleared correctly. Thank for the good info.

on 3/20/2008 thanks 'Peterfour'. i checked the website (cellplandepot.com). there is a one-time fee of $19.99. i still suggest to try listing your phone and contract on craig's list because that's not only free but also you could make some money out of selling your equipment.
