You can get hundreds of ideas for wedding hairstyles by searching online and flipping through the pages of bridal magazines. But can your hair really look that fabulous? Absolutely! Here are some professional hairstyling tips and tricks to help you get the look you love.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
Use hair extensions for longer, thicker wedding day hair.

Use hair extensions for longer, thicker wedding day hair.

One of the hottest looks in wedding hairstyles right now is long, flowing hair with just a bit pulled back off the face. If you don't have time to grow your hair out for your wedding, consider a set of extensions to give fullness and length where you need it.

For just a few hundred dollars you can get extensions made of real hair, dyed to match your own. Attaching and styling the extensions can be tricky at first so make sure you practice, or hire a professional stylist.

  2. Step 2
Mist hair with a setting spray before and after curling.

If a head full of curls is what you're after for your wedding day, think "variety" in order to keep your look natural. If you're using curling irons, use two or three barrel sizes and trade off as you curl your hair. With hot rollers or curlers, use an assortment of small, medium and large for the same effect.

  3. Step 3
A bit of hair padding can give your bun a full, dramatic look.

A bit of hair padding can give your bun a full, dramatic look.

Buns and chignons can be worn low at the nape of the neck, or high on the head. If you want a full look but your hair isn't quite long enough, ask your hairstylist to add a bit of hair padding. The padding looks a bit like cotton, but once your hair is smoothed over it you'll never know it's there. An alternative is to tease your hair with a fine tooth comb and carefully smooth the top layer for a finished look.

  4. Step 4

Sleek, straight styles give your wedding day look a modern edge and really highlights the accessories you choose to wear. If your hair has a bit of natural wave, use a flat iron to smooth, then mist with a setting spray.

  5. Step 5

To give a bun or chignon a polished look, have your hairstylist leave out a section of the hair to wrap around the top or bottom and then pin in place. You may also choose to insert a few hairpins or a comb to finish off your look.

  6. Step 6

A great way to give your style a bit of shine and "glow" like you see in the bridal magazines is to get highlights about 2-3 weeks before your wedding. The subtle changes in color will show up in person and in photos, and will warm up your skin tone too.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're going to be working with a professional stylist, start looking a year to 6 months in advance because they book up fast.
  • When having your hair done make sure you're wearing a shirt or blouse that buttons down the front so when you're ready to change into your gown you don't ruin your style.
  • Do a trial run (or two) before your wedding to make sure you love your wedding hairstyle and how it works with your hair accessories and veil.
  • Have a bridesmaid or friend stash a small bottle of hair spray and some bobby pins at the reception for quick touch-ups.

on 8/17/2009 I did Step #3 myself (chignon) and used a similar hair padding mentioned in this article. It was really easy to use, plus the stylist who sells them has videos showing you how to use them on her site. Pretty cool!
