How to get static free hair this winter

You know what I'm talking about--the sun is finally shining amidst the snow, you are actually not freezing (for once) and you have a really cute outfit on...these are all things you wish you could focus on if your hair wasn't sticking any and everywhere! It can be hard to deal with static-y hair, but take control of it this winter!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

1. Now, there are two reasons you have static in your hair: it's either too dry, or laden with hair products. Either way, try lightly running a dryer sheet over your head and watch the static go away, it's amazing. Be careful not to over do it though, it can also make your hair greasy.
2. Anyways, addressing the first reason, dryness, you need to invest in a hydrating shampoo and conditioner for the winter months. If you're looking for cheap, go for Sunsilk (the pink one). If you're looking to splurge, try Frederick Fekkai's reparative set (available at Sephora)
3. The next step is to get an intensive conditioner treatment to use once a week to give moisture back to hair. After a week's worth of blow-drying and ill-care, your hair is kind of upset with you and gets staticky. I've found that Pantene's intense conditioner works well.
4. After styling hair, use finishing balm/lotion or spray gel to hold hair in place. NOT HAIRSPRAY! Hairspray dries out your hair even more and thus is a horrible, horrible product. Ban it from your hair care.
5. Now, if you try this and it doesn't work, then you have the opposite problem...you have too much product in your hair! It is a thin line between good and too much and you have overstepped it, sweetheart. Head to the store and grab a clarifying shampoo (like Neutrogena). Your hair is becoming brittle and staticky because your other shampoo and conditioner isn't washing away all the gunk you have on your scalp. Starting with a clean head of hair is the best way to avoid static head. Unless of course, you're going for a french twist, then greasy is good.

Tips & Warnings

• When hair is still wet, put a small, small amount of leave-in conditioner in it to really tame your hair!
• If you are having a mid-day static crisis, rub some lotion on your hands and arms and before it dried, run your fingers through your hair to give it a little control. (This only works temporarily)
