Things You'll Need:
- Empty cat litter container
- Soap and water
- Waterproof paint
- Sand paper
- Drill with medium drill bit
- Container garden soil
- Various seeds and/or plants
-
Step 1
Pick a kitty litter container. Cat litter containers vary in size that you can use for gardening. If you don't have cats, ask a friend or neighbor that has cats for their empty cat litter containers.
-
Step 2
Wash the cat litter container before gardening. A mild dish detergent and hot water should clean the container. Many people who use cat litter containers feel the need to use bleach. If you use bleach, use it wisely. Use only as much as you need to clean the cat litter container and let it air dry for several hours before you plant anything in it.
-
Step 3
Tear off the labels and paint the sides to match the garden area or as desired. Soak the label in soap and water to help remove it. Rough up the surface of the cat litter container using a low-grade sand paper. Roughing up the surface helps the paint adhere better. Use waterproof paint and add a protection coat to prevent the paint from fading.
-
Step 4
Drill holes in the container. A garden container has to drain well. Put holes in the bottoms and sides of the container. Use a medium size drill bit to get through the plastic.
-
Step 5
Buy container garden soil. Container garden soil contains additives better suited for container gardening culture. Fill the container with the soil. Wait to plant anything in it for a few days. Give the soil a chance to settle to see if it needs more soil.
-
Step 6
Choose the plants or seeds you want to grow in the cat litter container. Grow seeds and plants as directed on the packages. Use smaller plants for cat litter container growing such as herbs, flowers and lettuce. However, you may use larger vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers and squash in these containers with proper trellises and staking
