How to Write Love Poetry for Seniors

Senior citizens have a unique perspective on life, having lived through decades of change. Seniors who have been married for many years will appreciate poetry that reflects love through the decades. Newly paired senior citizens may appreciate love poetry that reflects their special beginnings.

Instructions

1. Consider whether the poem will be "free verse" or follow a rhythmic pattern.

2. Check the rules for the poems with rhythmic pattern to make sure the poem is following the proper syllables and style.

3. Pick a topic or situation that the poem will include. Suggested topics include: new-found love, ageless love, love over the years, love and wisdom, love and growing older, love that changes over time and celebrating love.

4. Use words or phrases that are unique to elderly love, such as "timeless," "through the years" or "growing older together" to name a few.

5. Play around with a love poem generator such as one found at Links2Love. This will provide a base for a poem that can be customized.

6. Consider taking a classic poem by a well-known author and customizing the words to reflect elderly love. If it is to be published, give original credit to the author and the words, "Based on a poem by..."

7. Check to make sure that the poem has a purpose and a "flow" when read out loud. Poems with awkward lines or syllables out of place will not translate well into spoken prose.
