How to Crochet the Diagonal Shell Stitch
The shell stitch resembles rows of scallops with spaces in between and is an excellent pattern for summer sweaters and light shawls. In the shell stitch, the scallops seemingly stand on their hinges. In the diagonal shell stitch, they balance on one side. The following steps explain how to crochet the diagonal shell stitch

1
Start with a chain length that is a multiple of 4, plus 1 extra to give you room to turn.
-
2
Work a row of single crochet stitches. Chain 4 and turn.
-
-
3
Skip 3 stitches, then work a single crochet stitch in the fourth stitch. Chain 4 and skip the next 3 stitches. Work a single crochet stitch in the fourth stitch. Continue across the row. Chain 4 and turn.
-
4
Work 2 triple crochet stitches in the first chain 4 space. Then yarn over, insert the hook into the chain 4 space behind the first triple crochet stitch and work a double crochet stitch. Work 3 more double crochet stitches in the same way. Since you work the 4 stitch shell over 2 longer stitches, your shell will be tilted (diagonal).

5
Chain 4 and turn. Work a single crochet stitch into the fourth double crochet stitch of the row below. Chain 4, skip to the next shell and work a single crochet stitch into the fourth double crochet stitch again. Repeat across the row.

6
Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for the number of rows you want. Keep in mind that the even numbered rows are the right side of your project. The triple crochet stitches that form the foundation of the shells will be hidden.

Tips & Warnings
When you make diagonal stitches, pull up enough yarn to go across both triple crochet stitches. This will ensure that your piece will lie flat.
