Garage organization is just as important as the rest of the house for optimal productivity. Tools should have a special storage area of their own where the location of each tool is clearly marked for safe storage. Use these steps to learn more about proper tool storage and how to create a useful tool storage area in your garage.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Take a long, hard look around your garage. See what kind of space you have to work with and what kind of storage you need. If you need a tool chest, get one and start there.
Step2
Look at the tools you want to store. You should hang saws and other sharp or potentially dangerous objects higher, so children can't reach them. The most efficient way to hang tools is above the workbench you use most, so make sure that area is clear to reorganize.
Step3
Attach a 2x4 board to the wall to keep various sizes of clamps. Make a frame out of 1x4 pine, then attach a 1x2 across the top and bottom. This is a great place to store long handled tools and rulers.
Step4
Mount a peg board above your workbench and use pegs to hang screwdrivers, saws and other tools that can be hung. For small tools or accessories, use a locking cabinet or drawer.
Step5
Purchase a tool cabinet with a lock, if you don't want to mount your own storage aids. It should lock to keep out both children and burglars.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look at home improvement stores for kits for building entire storage areas. These come with clear instructions and don't take much time to set up.
  • Never leave tools where children or animals can be injured.
