Garage and estate sales can be lucrative places to pick up antique jewelry at inexpensive prices. But it's rare to find a ring that fits, and resizing can damage a valuable ring. If you've found a ring that's too big, you can wear it without resizing if you attach a ring guard.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Ring guard
  • Chain-nose pliers
Step1
Call your local hardware or hobby shops to find if they have cards of ring guards. Some jewelry stores will also sell ring guards.
Step2
Take the ring with you when you go to buy the guard, just to make certain that it will fit the ring. Although most ring guards fit most rings, and you might need to try out different brands before you find a good fit.
Step3
Slip the ring guard over the back of the ring. The guard should be on the outside edges of the ring with its center in the center of the ring.
Step4
Squeeze the sides of the ring guard together tightly with a pair of chain-nose pliers. Make certain it is secure.
Step5
Test the size on your finger. If you have made the ring too small, grip the guard and the back of the ring. Pinch them together to increase the size.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're afraid of damaging the ring as you attach the guard, wrap it in soft cloth and use the pliers on the outside of the cloth.
