Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Choose your project. The projects that have the greatest likelihood of success are those that can be finished in a weekend. If you have a big project that can't be accomplished in a weekend, schedule it when you have more time off or break it down into several weekend-long chunks of time.
Step2
Plan the project. All projects should be broken down into manageable steps. If you look at a project in terms of steps, it looks more manageable. Building a deck sounds like an overwhelming project. Break it down into steps such as cutting the wood, establishing a base, nailing or connecting the pieces and sanding.
Step3
List the tools and materials you need for a home improvement project. Get these before starting time. When you have to start your project by looking for things in your cluttered garage or randomly combing the racks of the home improvement store, you waste valuable time.
Step4
Do any prep work ahead of time. Perhaps cutting wood or preparing surfaces can be done after work during the week.
Step5
Schedule your DIY project. Find time when you don't have any other commitments, such as family visiting from out of town or kids' soccer games.
Step6
Get up early and start working. Motivation is highest at the beginning of the day. And the progress you make will keep you motivated throughout the day.
