It's time for a change in your room and furniture layout, but your heavy furniture has left indentations in your carpet. Despite your best efforts to remove or prevent carpet indentations, most cases are inevitable and occur with the weight of all furniture types. The good news is, most indentations bounce back with a little elbow grease and persistence.

From Quick Guide: Floored by Carpeting
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Groom your carpet indentations using a coin or a special grooming tool. Furniture indentations in carpet not only cause the carpet pile to be crushed, but also cause the backing to become indented. Grooming the carpet may only help improve some of the crushed fibers, but over time and vacuuming, the pile will come back with more bounce.

  2. Step 2

Place a damp towel over the indention, then steam over the towel with a hot iron. You can also hold a steam iron directly over the carpet indention not more than 4 inches above the spot. But do not touch the iron to the rug. Continue steaming until the iron warms the fibers. These procedures may help, but it will take time to release carpet fibers back to normal. Severe cases may be permanent.

  3. Step 3

Avoid carpet indentions by putting furniture glides or cups under the furniture legs. You can also move your furniture a couple of inches occasionally to give your carpet a break. You can also move your furniture layout around for a fresh and new change, while preventing the severity of carpet indentations.
