How to Fix a Vacuum Hose

Vacuum cleaners are heavily used and therefore likely to break down at some point. Often the problem is with the vacuum hose, which can be repaired at home without paying a professional or replacing the vacuum cleaner. Vacuum cleaner hoses are simple in construction, but there are many things that can go wrong with them. Read on to learn how to fix a vacuum hose.

• Coat hanger
• Broom
• Duct tape

1. Check the hose for obstructions. Turn the vacuum cleaner off and turn it upside down. Look into the bottom of the hose and look for an obstruction. Pull out the clog or use a coat hanger to pull out clogs further inside the hose.

2. Use a broom handle to loosen clogs too high for fingers or coat hangers. Knock the clog loose and then turn the vacuum over to let it fall out.

3. Remove the hose from the rest of the vacuum if it is extremely clogged and needs further action to remove the debris. Rinse the hose to remove stubborn debris or shake it vigorously.

4. Cover a crack in the hose with duct tape. Circle the outside of the hose with the tape for a fast fix that stays in place.

5. Call the company and ask for a specialized repair kit if the hose has a much larger problem, such as a large hole or several long cracks. Replace the hose if the damage is severe and the company does not offer a repair kit to fix it.

• Allow the vacuum to cool off before trying to fix the hose. Vacuums have internal parts that heat up during use.
