Get creative by crocheting a stylish and practical sweater. Choose the right color of yarn. And make a basic sweater for yourself or for another. The instructions below yield a basic, hip-length sweater with no collar or cuffs. The size is small; so adjust the pattern for different sizes.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plenty of yarn
  • Size 8H crochet hook
  1. Step 1

Start with the back by chaining 65. Single crochet in the second chain from hook and in each chain across 64 times. Move onto the second row and chain a single crochet in each single crochet across before turning. Repeat the second row until the piece is about 15 inches in length. Fasten off.

  2. Step 2

Move onto the armhole next. With a slip stitch, connect the yarn in the 5th stitch from the right edge. Chain a single crochet leaving the last 4 stitches undone. Keep going for 56 stitches or until it is about 22 inches in length.

  3. Step 3

Repeat the first step. The front will be done in the same way as the back. End with a wrong side row.

  4. Step 4

Chain a single crochet in the first 16 stitches, then turn. Continue until it is the same size as the back. This will be the left shoulder. Fasten off.

  5. Step 5

Move on to the right shoulder by skipping over the center 24 stitches for the neck. Connect the yarn with a slip stitch into the next stitch. Continue to do 16 stitches until it is the same length as the left shoulder. Once again, fasten off.

  6. Step 6

Move onto the sleeves next. Chain 37, then single crochet in the second chain from hook and in each chain across for 36 stitches, and then turn. For the second row, chain a single crochet across, and then turn. Repeat row 2 three more times. Increase the row by working 2 single crochet in first and last stitch, then single crochet in each stitch across for 38 before turning. Repeat the increase row every 10th row 9 times. Then fasten off.

  7. Step 7

Finish by stitching together the shoulder seams. Fasten off, and weave in the loose ends into the fabric.
