Painting a kitchen backsplash is a wonderful way to add beauty to the kitchen area and save a good deal of money. Painting the backsplash, as opposed to tiling or even placing marble or stainless steel there, is a more economical approach to creating a fresh new facade. Complete this approach to refinishing with a little time and patience.
Things You'll Need
- Masking tape
- Brushes or rollers
- Damp cloth
Determine what colors and in what amount you need to complete the project. Take into consideration the existing color scheme of the surrounding area and appliances.
Purchase enough paint and supplies. Be certain to buy just a bit more paint than calculated to ensure there will be some leftover for touch up or refinishing at another time.
Sand the area with medium grit sandpaper. Use a damp cloth to wipe away any debris from this process. Finish this step with fine grit sandpaper and wipe down.
Paint the kitchen backsplash using a roller or a good quality paintbrush. Put on the first coat and let it dry completely. Depending on the paint, this can take 1 to 8 hours.
Layer the paint to the desired gloss or matte finish letting each coat dry in between layers.
Tips & Warnings
- For painting over tile, use a good quality ceramic paint.
- Be creative when painting the back splash by painting in a small mural or special pattern.
- Always wear eye protection and gloves.
