How to Be a Boondocks Cartoon Fan

“The Boondocks" is a controversial, satiric cartoon that airs on the Adult Swim programming segment of Cartoon Network. Created and executive produced by Aaron McGruder, the show debuted in 2005 and is rated TV-MA. The following are some tips for becoming a Boondocks cartoon fan.

1. Know the main characters. "The Boondocks" focuses on the Freemans, a black family living in Woodcrest, Maryland. Huey, 10, and Riley, 8, are brothers who live with their Grandad, Robert Jebediah Freeman. Tom, Sara and Jazmine Dubois are the Freeman family's next door neighbors and Uncle Ruckus often spends time with Grandad.
2. Get familiar with the background story. Huey and Riley come to live with their granddad in Woodcrest, Maryland. Moving from the south side of Chicago to predominantly white, suburban Woodcrest is quite a culture shock for the boys.
3. Appreciate the fact that "The Boondocks" doesn't shy away from controversial subjects, yet still maintains a strong sense of humor. Racial issues and social commentary permeate almost every aspect of the show. Common topics include race relations, current events, prejudice, discrimination, politics and interracial marriage. This cartoon is not for the politically correct or easily offended.
4. Read the comic strip. Aaron McGruder introduced "The Boondocks" as a comic strip in 1997. In 1999, the strip was picked up by newspapers across the country. The creator has maintained a sense of continuity between the comic strip and the television series.
