The preppie style has been around for as long as most people can remember. The look is stronger than ever and shows no signs of slowing down. Follow these steps to dress classically preppie in an updated style.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Keep it simple. To dress preppie, forgo overly busy or complicated outfits and individual pieces. Anything with too many buckles, pockets, zippers and the like is out of the question.

  2. Step 2

Stick to the classics. Preppie dress does not adhere to passing trends. Polo and oxford shirts are key components of a preppie wardrobe. Sheath dresses, cable knit sweaters and khakis also work well. Blazers and deck shoes are always good choices.

  3. Step 3

Wear structured pieces. The preppie style of dress requires clean lines and good fit. Choose items with darting and lots of seaming. Pick clothes that are made from natural fibers and have a good weight to them. A sharp, tailored look is preferred over anything flimsy, artsy or bohemian.

  4. Step 4

Dress in layers. It gives your outfits a pulled-together, sophisticated look. Create the preppie look by wearing sweater vests, cardigans and blazers.

  5. Step 5

Mind your color palette. Classic preppie style is based on pastel color schemes. Primary colors are also stylish. To modernize your preppie look, choose brighter, even neon colors for classic items. Also keep in mind that larger prints are preferred over smaller ones.

  6. Step 6

Clean and press. Clothes must be both wrinkle and stain free to maintain that preppie look.

  7. Step 7

Accessorize carefully. Keep your accessories to a minimum. They should be sleek and sophisticated. Don't wear anything gaudy or distracting.
