How to Make Dish Soap

When you have sensitive skin, washing dishes is a task to dread. Commercial dish soap causes irritations, rashes and break outs that are painful for days. Make homemade dish soap to avoid any rashes and you won't mind scrubbing dinner dishes quite as much. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Water
  • Large pot
  • 2 cups soap flakes
  • 2 tablespoons glycerin
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar or lemon juice
  • 2 to 5 drops of your favorite essential oil
  • Bottle for completed dish soap
  • 2 cups soap shavings from an old bar of soap
  • Razor
  • Bucket or small bowl
  • Hot water
  • 2 cups liquid castile soap
  • 2 to 5 drops of essential oil

Instructions

  1. Use Soap Flakes

    • 1

      Mix 1 gallon of warm water and soap flakes in a large pot.

      Dissolve the soap flakes in the water on the stove set to low heat. Continually stir the mix while it is heating.

      Stir in the glycerin and take the mix off the stove.

      Cool the mix and then add 1/2 cup of lemon juice or white vinegar.

      Mix in 2 to 5 of drops of your favorite essential oil.

      Pour the mixture into a bottle and shake well.

    Use a Bar of Soap

      Use a razor to shave an old bar of soap into pieces. Let the shavings fall into a bucket or small bowl.

      Pour 2 to 3 cups of hot water over the soap. Allow it to soak for at least 3 hours, or until the soap has softened.

      Mash the soap and stir the pieces together until they are smooth. Add more hot water if necessary to soften the mix.

      Pour the mixture into a bottle and shake it up.

    Use Castile Soap

      Mix a 1/2 cup of warm water with the liquid castile soap. Castile soap is made from vegetable oil and is better for sensitive skin. Purchase castile soap at department stores such as Wal-mart or Target.

      Add a pleasant scent to the soap with 2 to 5 drops of an essential oil.

      Mix the soap until it combines.

      Pour the solution into a bottle.

      Shake up the mixture before you use the soap.

  • Always shake your homemade dish soap before you use it.

  • To help your dish soap cut through grease, add 1/2 cup of white vinegar or lemon juice.

    I tried this and it worked just fine for me. I used 2 "hotel" facial soaps (not the deoderant soaps) and 2 cups of hot water. Voila, dish soap. Thanks!
