The kitchen is typically one of the most used rooms in the house. People often use their kitchens to cook, entertain and eat. When you decorate your home, you want to pay extra attention to the kitchen. You must be careful with the kitchen colors that you pick.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Examine the color of your cabinets. The hues that you choose to use in the kitchen should complement them. For example, darker cabinets usually work best with deeper and bolder hues.

  2. Step 2

Match the floor and wall tiles. Find color inspiration for your kitchen from the tiles that decorate the room. If there is a design in the tile, pick one of the colors used to paint the room.

  3. Step 3

Use mood to pick the kitchen colors. If you want to make the kitchen feel vibrant, use accent colors that are bold. Greens and reds are ideal kitchen accent colors.

  4. Step 4

Consider a wall color that works well with a border. Wallpaper borders work well in a kitchen and the wall color should complement the design that you choose.

  5. Step 5

Keep the lighting in mind. Kitchens are usually bright rooms with a lot of natural light. Overly bright colors may look like an eyesore in a well lit kitchen. Cooler tones, like light blues, will work better in this type of room.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can always paint the cabinetry in your kitchen. Pick a color that matches the rest of the kitchen decor.
  • Remember to bring along swatches of your cabinet and furniture colors when you go to choose your paint colors. This will ensure that you match the colors well.

on 9/15/2009 Keep appliances in mind... ie-- The popularity of stainless appliances can quickly be overshadowed by the unforgiving reflective qualities of the metal... Nothing worse than an 'orange' kitchen on some wood-tone schemes.
