How to Make a Bed Headboard

You don't have to be a carpenter to build a headboard. You don't even have to commit to a specific design or color palette. This design doesn't require wood or a hammer and can be changed seasonally to keep your bedroom looking fresh.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Purchase curtain rings with clips (package of at least 80), 2 European shams that compliment your bedding and room décor, 2 fillers for the European shams and a decorative curtain rod that is at least as wide as your bed and blends with your room's décor.
Step2
Gather your tools, including a drill, screwdriver, measuring tape and level. Mount the curtain rod brackets above the bed. The rod should be centered and 28 to 36 inches above the mattress. Use the level and measure both horizontally and vertically so the rod is centered and straight.
Step3
Insert the fillers into the European shams. Although European pillows are square in shape, make sure they fit properly into the sham. If you have trouble inserting the fillers, turn the pillow and try to put it into the sham again. Fluff the pillows so they fill out the shams evenly.
Step4
Slide the curtain rings onto the rod and place the rod into the brackets securely. It is important that the rod snap into place on the bracket so your headboard remains stable.
Step5
Hang the pillow from the curtain ring clips on the rod. Space the clips evenly along each pillow so the shams will hang without bumps or wrinkles.
Step6
Stand back and admire your new, carpentry-free headboard. Remember that you can update this headboard each season, just by changing the weight, color or pattern of the fabric on your pillow shams.

on 7/2/2008 A pillow sham is a covering for a pillow form. Like a pillowcase, it slips onto the pillow form via an opening in the back (middle) or side. You can make your own. If you do, choose a sturdy fabric if you are going to hang it via curtain rings as this suggests. A lighter weight fabric could be made sturdier by backing it with quilt batting and creating a knife edge finish all around the pillow (requires a middle back opening). You have probably seen pillow shams just didn't know what they were called. They make a pillow you might sleep on look finished when you make the bed but you would want to remove them for sleep. On my bed, I have two sets of pillows in shams. Square European-size pillows sit behind regular size pillow, both covered with pillow shams.
BTW: "sham" is a Person surname meaning sun, but I digress.

on 7/2/2008 Well written, and sounds ingenious. But I can't get a mental picture of it to appreciate this cleverness. Believe it or not, I don't know exactly what a sham is, and (also unbelievable but true) can't seem to find an unambiguous image of a "sham"!
