Memorial Day is observed the last Monday in May. It honors armed services personnel who have died for our country. Flags are placed on the tombstones of fallen soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery on this national holiday. Making Memorial Day cupcakes is a festive way to remember our fallen soldiers. Make them patriotic by decorating them in red, white and blue.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Miniature flags
  • Boxed cake mix
  • Cupcake liners
  • Cupcake baking pan
  • White, whipped frosting
  • Red and blue food coloring
  • 3 bowls
  • 2 mixing spoons
  • Frosting knife
  • Serving platter
  1. Step 1

Visit your local craft store and purchase miniature flags to place on your cupcakes. Food ornamentation is normally found in the cake decorating aisle.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a cake mix, ingredients, cupcake liners and a cupcake pan from your local grocery store.

  3. Step 3

Buy a large container of white, prepared whipped frosting. Red and blue food dye should also be on your shopping list.

  4. Step 4

Prepare your cupcakes according to the instructions on the cake mix package and let them cool completely. Meanwhile, divide the frosting into 3 bowls. Mix the red food dye and frosting with a mixing spoon into one bowl. Mix the blue food dye and frosting into the second bowl. Leave the third bowl of frosting white.

  5. Step 5

Decide on using red, white and blue striped cupcakes or solid color cupcakes. Spread the frosting on your cupcakes with a frosting knife or regular dinner knife. If you are feeling especially creative, create miniature flag design with the frosting.

  6. Step 6

Place a miniature flag in each cupcake. Arrange the cupcakes on platter and serve.

Tips & Warnings
  • Patriotic cupcake liners are a nice decorative touch. Specialty liners will most likely be found at a craft store.
  • Pillsbury sells a seasonal boxed cake mix, “Stars & Stripes Funfetti Cake Mix” that contains patriotic decorations.
  • Cake decorating aisles contain a wide array of decorating products. Stars, gummy bears, or sparkles can be patriotic.
  • Whipped frosting is easier to spread. Remember to clean your frosting knife when changing frosting colors. Frosting spreads better at room temperature.
  • Wait for your cupcakes to cool before frosting since frosting will melt if the cupcake is too warm.
