If your CD-ROM drive is not recognizing that there is a disc in the drive or your CDs are skipping, it is time to clean the CD-ROM drive. Clean your CD-ROM drive every 3 months to make sure it is free of dust, hair and other debris. Cleaning your CD-ROM drive regularly will lengthen the life of the drive and your CDs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open your computer case for cleaning and open the CD tray. The easiest way to clean dust and particles out of your CD-ROM drive is with air. Using a can of compressed air, gently blow air through the front of the tray opening. Do not use too much pressure as it may cause damage to the components.

  2. Step 2

Buy a CD laser lens cleaning kit. These cleaners are very inexpensive and can be found at electronics stores.

  3. Step 3

Use the CD-ROM drive cleaning kit as directed. Basically, you need to insert the laser lens cleaner in your drive and then follow the audio instructions carefully. The process takes only a few minutes. The laser lens cleaner will remove dust, particles and debris from your CD-ROM drive.

  4. Step 4

Put your CD laser lens cleaner back in its case to avoid damage. To clean the CD itself, wipe with a damp, soft, lint-free cloth in a circular motion to avoid scratching the disc. Play your CD as usual.

Tips & Warnings
  • Clean your CDs and CD-ROM drive regularly to avoid scratching and damage to your components.
  • Do not use your mouth to blow air into the CD-ROM drive as you may have food particles in your mouth that can damage the drive.
