No matter what precautions are taken, it seems impossible that a child's mattress will be free of evening mishaps when they're potty training. The scent of urine in a mattress will smell up the entire room. Try these tips to remove urine smell from mattresses.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Several soft cloths
  • Carpet or upholstery cleaner
  • Baking soda
  1. Step 1

Open the windows in the room to get the air moving and to help dry the mattress. Turn on a ceiling or oscillating fan as well.

  2. Step 2

Soak up as much of the urine as you can with a dry towel.

  3. Step 3

Clean the mattress with a carpet and upholstery cleaner. Scrub with a soft cloth and then soak up any excess fluids with a dry towel.

  4. Step 4

Let the mattress air dry. This may take about 24 hours, depending on how wet it was.

  5. Step 5

Spray the mattress with an odor remover spray. Be sure and cover the entire area and a little bit outside of it.

  6. Step 6

    Let the mattress dry.

  7. Step 7

Sprinkle baking soda on the mattress if it still smells. Let it sit for 24 hours and then vacuum it off.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try putting a plastic mattress cover over the mattress if your child has frequent accidents.
  • Use a crib pad under the sheet to absorb night time accidents.
  • Wait until the mattress is completely dry before using the odor remover spray.
  • Do not mix cleaning products. They can have chemical reactions that can be harmful or fatal.
