The painted desert of Utah, the home of the Great Salt Lake, is one of the most dramatic yet serene natural backdrops for a wedding ceremony. It’s no surprise that thousands of couples recite their vows in the cradle of all this natural beauty. It’s easy to set up a wedding there. Just follow these steps to get married in Utah.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • marriage license
  • identification
Step1
Get a Utah marriage license. Remember, you’ll need to apply for a license in the county in which you plan to be married.
Step2
Choose a time of the year to get married. Utah offers extremely diverse climates. Decide what you want from your wedding (outdoorsy or wintery?) and choose a season accordingly.
Step3
Choose a place for the ceremony. In Southern Utah there are plenty of places that never see snow, but in Northern Utah are some of the most famous ski resorts on Earth. There’s a little something for everybody, so take your time finding just the right spot.
Step4
Write the guest list. This is something that should be done together. Take into consideration that although there are many people that could be invited, the more people at the wedding, the more it costs.
Step5
Find an officiate to perform the ceremony. Most couples opt for the clergy member of their church they feel most comfortable with. However, public officials like county clerks and judges can also perform the ceremony.

Tips & Warnings

  • The fee for marriage licenses vary from county to county in Utah. Most, though, hover around $40 or $50. This fee includes two copies of the license for the couple.
  • If you’ve been divorced, you won’t need to present proof of it for a marriage license other than to be able to offer the date of its completion.
  • Cousin marriage is only legal in the state of Utah if both people are over the age of 65 or can prove they are sterile.
  • There is no waiting period in the awarding of a Utah marriage license, but licenses do expire after 30 days, so apply only as your wedding day approaches.
