Changing the toner cartridge in an HP Laser Printer may seem like a hassle, but it is actually very quick and easy. Many printers are user-friendly, and cartridges have become easier to change over the years. Follow these steps to replace a toner cartridge in an HP Laser Printer:

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • HP Laser Printer
  • Toner Cartridge
  1. Step 1

Open the printer lid and take the cartridge out. Inspect the cartridge for numbers in bold print that identify its make and model.

  2. Step 2

Find the make and model of your printer, and write this information down on a piece of paper along with the cartridge numbers. Replace the cartridge temporarily.

  3. Step 3

Bring the paper to your local office-supply store. You will almost certainly purchase the correct cartridge if you are able to tell them the model number you have.

  4. Step 4

Remove the packaging at your home or office, carefully following any directions.

  5. Step 5

Pull the old cartridge—gently—out of the printer and dispose of or recycle it.

  6. Step 6

Place the new cartridge in, following the diagram and instructions in your owner’s manual or the ones posted on the lid of the printer.

  7. Step 7

Print a test page to make sure the cartridge has been installed properly. If not, take the cartridge out and try again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stock up on replacement cartridges when you are at the local office-supply store.
  • Recycle used cartridges at a local school or office-supply center.
  • Don’t set the cartridge down anywhere unless the surface is covered with newspaper.
  • Be very careful when replacing the cartridge, because toner stains will not come out of clothing.
