How to Remove Melted Crayon from Vehicle Seating

Children don't usually like to ride in the car, especially for long trips. You could amuse them with a coloring book and crayons. Unfortunately, sometimes those crayons stay in the hot car once you've arrived, and they melt all over your seating. Don't worry! Use the following steps to remove melted crayon wax from your vehicle.

    Things You'll Need

    • Paper towels
    • Grease-fighting dishwashing liquid
    • Butter knife or metal spoon
    • Wet cloth
    • Scrub brush
    • Cleaner like WD-40

Scrape off as much of the crayon as you can. Use a butter knife to pry some wax from the seats. You could also try a metal spoon. Turn it upside down and scrape from the top of the crayon residue to the bottom.

Spray the stained area with a cleaner like WD-40. Let it soak for 5 to 10 minutes. Use a small bristle brush and scrub the stained area. Go over the area one or two times; then wipe the stain with a paper towel. The paper towel will pick up the crayon you have loosened.

Spray the area again with a cleaner like WD-40. Dab the stain with a grease-fighting dishwashing liquid. Rub this into the stain with the scrub brush. Use a wet cloth to wipe the area. The stain should now be gone. If not, repeat the process until all the stain is gone.

Allow the area to dry overnight before using the vehicle.

I just tried the WD-40 method on my rear seats. I have two words following my effort. UH-MAZIN'. I will have to deal with the fumes for a little while, but the volitility of WD-40 also means that it will evaporate pretty quickly. We don't smoke, so my risk of flame is no greater than it otherwise would be. Of some importance in these trying times, the cost of the WD-40 method must be a fraction of the carpet cleaner method. Anyway, it works for me. Thanks for the tip.

Although effective, this method results in fumes, plus WD-40 is a volatile chemical, remaining in the seat fabric, and increasing its flammability. A better method is to heat an iron, lay several layers of coffee filter or paper towels over the crayon, and iron over it until the majority of the wax is absorbed. Takes a little more initial effort going back and forth to reheat the iron unless you have an extension cord, but it is worth it. Once most of the wax is removed, you can use any spot cleaner such as Resolve to remove any remaining stain. Use the hand tool on most carpet shampoo machines to go over the seat afterward and allow to dry thoroughly.
