How to Choose a Bra to Wear With Summer Tops

Summer attire boasts finer material, body-baring silhouettes and lighter colors. Since your basic bra may seem bulky and somewhat obvious under these conditions, consider buying a few bras designed to go undetected when paired with your favorite summer tops.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bralettes
  • Bras
  • Sports Bras
  1. Step 1

Invest in a convertible bra. Although manufacturers are still perfecting a truly comfortable version, this bra will support you well under a backless bodice and halter tops.

  2. Step 2

Opt for styles without lace and seams for a clean look under fitted sleeveless tops and fine knit shells. If you're a size A or B, look for stretch cotton bralettes - they resemble a very cropped tank top with adjustable straps.

  3. Step 3

Try a demi bra when wearing a plunging or revealing neckline. Designed with wide-set cups that just cover the nipple, they offer good support with maximum exposure.

  4. Step 4

Wear flesh tones when sporting pastels or sheer materials like linen. White bras will be very conspicuous.

  5. Step 5

Combat sweat-inducing humidity by pairing summer attire with a moisture-wicking sports bra. They offer great support, and the high-tech fabric will keep you a lot drier than most fashion bras.

  6. Step 6

Consider racer back or cross back bras to wear with sleeveless tops and shells. You can rest assured that your bra straps won't slip into view.

  7. Step 7

Go strapless under skinny-strap tanks and strapless tops. Smaller chests can get away with a stretch tube bra, while larger chests may still need the support of a more constructed bra that hooks in the back.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bring your favorite summer tops when shopping for bras. Check coverage in the underarm area, too, as some armholes are cut so low that they reveal the body of the bra.
  • Check lingerie boutiques and specialty stores for unique styling and colors that may not be carried in the major department stores.
  • Manufacturers have gotten wise to the fact that many summer tops are difficult to wear with a bra. Look for tanks and sleeveless tops that have built-in bras.
  • The lighter weight of sheer material may be ideal for the heat of summer, but it may leave you too exposed under fine and delicate materials.

on 6/20/2007 Another option is to get interchangeable or designer bra straps. I found this place online www.gibsigirl.com that has some really cute ones that are very comfortable and inexpensive. I have the beaded ones that look as though they are twisted and they are flexible and do not slip off the shoulders. I get complements and I can wear whatever I want. I simply love it and it's a must have for the summer. Check it out....

Embrace is a fully detachable bra strap accessory that converts any normal bra into a cross-back style. Simple to use, Embrace keeps bra straps concealed under the latest fashions, hides your bra straps when they are peeking out of your tank top & keeps them

It's a translucent plastic disc that draws your bra straps to the center of your back and secures them in place. Added Bonus: It gives the girls an extra lift. Embrace is both discreet & comfortable and it's sleek girlish design makes it undetectable under clothing.

on 8/8/2006 There is a new product I came across. It is called a Strap Tamer, Bra Strap Concealer. It is a pin with a clip. You attach the pin to the inside shoulder seam of a sleeveless shirt and slip your bra strap into the clip. When you take your shirt off, you can simply leave the Strap Tamer pinned in place, even while laundered. It is there ready for the next time you wear that top.
