Bricks vary by location ' manufacturers in different areas will produce variations of the same classes of bricks. Here's how to make your way through the confusion.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Learn the characteristics of the different classifications of bricks (see below). They all have certain characteristics relating to size, durability, weathering and appearance.

  2. Step 2

Use firebricks, which are yellow and made from fired clay, to line a fireplace or barbecue, or to build a kiln. Be sure to use fire-resistant mortar with this type.

  3. Step 3

Choose face bricks if the brick is to be exposed. These are uniform in color and shape and come in a wide range of textures and tones.

  4. Step 4

Look for building bricks if the wall will be covered with stucco or plaster. These all-purpose bricks are relatively inexpensive.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are three weathering grades of brick: Severe weathering (SW) should be used on driveways, patios and any areas that will experience freezing. Moderate weathering (MW) brick is ideal for garden walls and areas where frost and freezing is minimal. No weathering (NW) brick is generally used only indoors.
  • Store bricks in a dry, flat location protected from water, which could soak in and cause damage or staining.
