How to Make Italian-Style Charoset

This Italian-style recipe is a delicious departure from the traditional Central European mixture of apples, walnuts and wine. At the Passover seder, charoset represents the mortar used by Hebrew slaves in Egypt. This recipe is kosher for Passover and serves 8.

Things You'll Need:

  • juice and zest of one oranges
  • 2 tbsp. honey
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 c. Muscat raisins
  • 1/2 c. sweet red wines
  • 1 c. slivered almonds
  • 1/2 c. chopped walnuts
  • 1 c. chopped dried Mission figs
  • 1 c. chopped dates
  • 1 tbsp. poppy seeds
  • Juice And Zest Of One Oranges
  • 1 tbsp. poppy seeds
  • 1 c. chopped dates
  • 1/2 c. sweet red wines
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp. honey
  • 1/2 c. chopped walnuts
  • 1 c. Muscat raisins
  • 1 c. chopped dried Mission figs
  • 1 c. slivered almonds
  1. Step 1

    Place the zest, orange juice, wine, honey and cinnamon in a bowl. Mix to incorporate. Stir in the poppy seeds. Set aside.

  2. Step 2

    Place the almonds, walnuts, dates, figs and raisins in a large bowl and toss to distribute evenly.

  3. Step 3

    Briefly stir the orange juice-wine mixture, add it to the dried fruit and nuts, then toss again to coat.

  4. Step 4

    Place in a serving bowl and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to let the flavors meld.

  5. Step 5

    Thirty minutes before serving, remove charoset from the refrigerator. Serve at room temperature.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure your wine is kosher if you're making this recipe for Passover.
