How to Fix a Berkline Recliner Chair That Reclines Too Easily

The Berkline Corporation is an East Tennessee-based furniture company that specializes in recliner chairs and sofas primarily designed for use in home cinema rooms. The recliner chairs feature TouchMotion technology, which means they recline at the touch of a button instead of requiring the user to pull a lever. The recliner can go backward quickly if you are lightweight or short because the tension is set for the weight and size of an average person. If your Berkliner recliner chair reclines too easily, adjust the tension by accessing the actuating springs.

Things You'll Need

  • Workbench or sturdy table
  • Pliers
  • Flip the chair upside down on a workbench. If you cannot lift the chair by yourself, then ask someone to assist you. You cannot put it upside down on the floor because the recliner cannot be opened in this position. If you do not have a workbench, you can try substituting a table instead.

  • Open the footrest so the chair is at the full recline position. Use the push button as you normally do.

  • Pull out one of the two coiled actuating springs, which are located on the underside of the chair on the opposite side of the push button. The springs create tension for the footrest; the amount of tension determines how slowly or quickly the footrest goes up when raised. Each end of the spring is secured to the chair by being hooked into a hole on the cross stretcher. Use your fingers or a pair of pliers to pull out the spring. Keep the spring in case you need it in the future.

  • Close the footrest, and remove the chair from workbench or table. Because the chair has one less spring now, the lessened tension means the footrest will not lift as quickly.
