How to Make an Edge for a Bridal Veil
A bridal veil is a lovely accent piece to a bride's dress, but many women are surprised to see the high prices of veils in bridal shopes and boutiques. To maximize their budgets, some brides chose to make their own veils from tulle, combs and flowers purchased at a craft or fabric store. Adding a lace ribbon or pearl edge to a handmade veil adds a touch of elegance for a fraction of the cost of a designer veil. Does this Spark an idea?

- Serger
- Decorative thread
- Pearl edging
- Lace
- Satin ribbon
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Fabric glue
- Rhinestones
- Plastic tablecloth

- White satin cording

Use a serger to sew a rolled hem on your veil. For a little added sparkle, thread the serger with decorative silver, gold or irridescent thread.

Use a serger to sew a string of tiny pearls onto the edge of your veil. Some sergers have presser feet designed especially for this type of project. Practice on a scrap of tulle first to make sure the settings on the serger are correct and to get a feel for the process.

Sew lace or satin ribbon to the edge of your veil with a standard sewing machine. Position the trim about 1/2-inch from the edge of the veil and stitch along the edge using a straight stitch. Use scissors to trim away the excess tulle for a professional, finished look.

Use fabric glue to attach pearls, rhinestones or other embellishments to the edge of your veil. Before gluing, cover your work surface with a non-absorbant plastic tablecloth. Use toothpicks to apply small amounts of glue to the embellishments. Allow the glue to dry completely before moving the veil.

Sew white satin cording to the edge of your veil. Lay the cording along the edge of the veil and fold the tulle over the cording. Sew by hand with a needle and white thread. Trim the excess tulle away from the edge with scissors.

Tips & Warnings
Ribbon and other trims may be sewn to the edge of the veil by hand but this is much more time consuming than machine sewing.
When gluing on trim, do not cover your work surface with newspaper, as the ink can discolor your veil.
Do not glue trim onto your veil with hot glue. Hot glue is messy, it does not provide professional looking results, and it melts easily in warm conditions.
