How to Crochet an Easy Bookmark

Crochet bookmarks add an elegant, lacy touch to your reading activities. The crochet technique of working in the round by using both sides of the starting chain gives you an oblong bookmark in just two rounds. The first round forms the center strip for the bookmark. The second round adds decorative loops to the edge. Stitching with crochet thread instead of yarn ensures that your bookmark remains thin enough to fit comfortably between the pages of any book.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a length of crochet chain stitches that measures approximately 6 1/2 inches and contains an even number of stitches.

    • 2

Double crochet in the fourth chain from the hook and in each chain across the row. At the end, do not turn the work.

    • 3

Make seven more double crochet stitches in the last chain stitch.

    • 4

Work on the opposite side of the starting chain and double crochet in each stitch back to the start of the chain.

    • 5

Double crochet seven times in the last stitch at the end of the round.

    • 6

Slip stitch into the first double crochet to join the round.

    • 7

Chain five stitches. Skip a stitch. Single crochet in the next stitch.

    • 8

Repeat Step 7 around the entire piece until you come back to the start. Slip stitch in the base of the starting chain-five to end the round. Cut the thread to fasten off.

    • 9

Apply a warm iron to the bookmark to smooth it out if necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • Weave satin ribbon over and under groups of three double crochet stitches in the center of the bookmark to add another decorative touch to the bookmark. Leave the ends of the ribbon extending out from the bookmark to add length and a fringe effect to your bookmark.

  • Increase the length of the starting chain to make longer bookmarks.

  • Do not use the steam setting on your iron when ironing crochet pieces. Steam will flatten and distort the shape of the stitches.
