How to Make a Blue Jean Purse Without Having to Sew It

Turn a pair of jeans into a no-sew bag.

An old pair of blue jeans can provide the basis for a bag that requires no sewing at all. Bondable seam tape reacts with heat to bind two pieces of fabric to each other, and a bandanna inside the bag keeps the seams from coming loose. This project is a good way to recycle jeans, instead of throwing them away. Try it as a craft for a bunch of girls at a party or scouting event.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut an 18-inch tube-shaped section from the leg of a pair of jeans. The narrower end is the top of the bag and the wider end is the bottom of the bag. Turn the denim tube inside out and iron it.

    • 2

Fold up a 1/2-inch hem on the top and bottom of the tube. Iron to crease. Fold another 1-inch hem on the top and bottom and iron them. Cut a piece of 1/2-inch bondable seam tape to fit around the top of the bag. Insert the tape under the last hem and press to bond it.

    • 3

Cut a piece of bondable seam tape long enough to fit around the bottom of the bag. Insert it into the hem and press to bond it. Cut another piece the length of the bottom opening and press between the sides to bond the bottom closed.

    • 4

Cut four small slits, one on each side of the front and one on each side of the back of the purse. Each slit should be about 1 1/2 inches long and vertical. Cut six 24-inch long, 1-inch wide strips of fabric from the other pants leg. Have a friend hold one end of three pieces as you braid them together. Insert one end into the left front slit and tie the ends in a knot. Insert the other end into the right front slit and tie the ends in a knot. Repeat with the other three strips to make the back bag strap.

    • 5

Insert a bandanna into the bag so that the right side faces up. Tie each corner of the bandanna to the nearest strap end, just where it connects to the bag. The bandanna will hold your things inside of the purse so they don't put pressure on the bottom seam tape.
